Red arrows at Portland
Nutters, skilled nutters
Portland gets a little Red Arrow treatment, as part of the Weymouth Carnival day. Weymouth bay is just to the left of the big tanker boat on the harbour here.
Their routine was centred on Weymouth beach, so obviously that is the best place to see it, but with the holidaymakers crowded there, it’s far more appealing to us Portlanders to use our vantage points to enjoy it… at least what we do see of it.
But I wasn’t the only one…
As you can see…

Can ya blame them with that view?
This is just one of the few good places to come and see the Red Arrows, several other points on Portland where you can get a great view.
Newground, the main viewing area of tophill is a good one, but there are also lots of others who use it, great for those who drive up, I rather walk to where I did, near the entrance to the main prison.
The Red Arrows deserve applause, what a skilled bunch of pilots, nutters in many senses… that routine would of course cause us mere walkers to black out!
Fun though!
You watch it? Or if not local, ever seen the red arrows?
Grab the button.

I just caught a very brief glance today from my garden in Southwell but I have been watching these guys for over 30 years now and never cease to admire their skills – they are, without a shadow of a doubt the most fantastic entertainment I have ever had the pleasure to watch. They outshine the divers at La Quabrada (unsure of that spelling) in Acapulco, Mexico by far and those guys are no fools. Long may the Red Arrows entertain the admiring crowds. Thank you for sharing

Come on now, don’t by shy sharing your pretty faces.
It was a lovely place to watch them – it’s just a shame they can’t come a bit closer to Portland. They certainly used to do at least one flyover in the past.

Hey Jess,
Glad to see you comment here.
It was good, but yeah you have a point there, they really did used to fly closer, typical… lose more to Weymouth! *sigh.
Nice write up and lovely photos.Although I don’t live on Portland anymore (only a stone’s throw away though) seeing the Red Arrows is always so nostalgic, happy reminders of my days growing up on out beautiful Island. Would have been there today to watch them had I not ordered my shopping to be delivered a bit too early, doh! Be there next year for sure…

Yeah, good times eh…
Good one, ordering the shopping at that time, bet the bloke delivering it probably had hard time keeping his eye on the road…

Surprized the Muff Council let them come anywhere near Portland. They used to come over lots of times.
