Portland's view over the Fleet.
Portland has a few great vantage points. It is also changing alot itself, as can be seen in the bottom of the picture, new buildings flying up.
So.. it seems appropriate that Bob Wollage wrote a great poem way back in 1980 which will still resonate today, quite prophetic I would say…
THE TIDE OF TIME
Gone on the tide of time that engulfs us,
Exposing our Island like tattered underclothing -
or naked wallpaper.
Our fireplace filled with the ashes of memories.
Gone too our heart,
Mutilated and scattered over unseen continents,
Replaced with grey white boxes, in chaotic disarray
that blast noise into the open streets.
Gone are the green pastures of our youth,
The quiet lanes – the singing birds,
the smell of dew drenched hay -
wafted in on the morning air.
Soon we will be an Island of over-built holes -
and mounds, valerian and worm-wood -
While our Council sits.
Then many more efficient edifices of gleaming
concrete and plasterboard -
will lay our mournful dust.
They do not know -
And our protests are in Vain.
And the council wonders why we Portlanders have no respect for them, they treat Portland with contempt, that last paragraph says it all!
Always have since we lost own own council.
We need to slow down, that’s for sure.

As soon as I saw this poem of Bob’s, it dawned on me what a clever far-seeing man he was. Glad you liked it Rob, and think lots will agree with it

I agree, he must have known the island well, to spot little changes then see how that can pan out far off down the line, tells you alot.
Doubt there will be anyone who can disagree with this poem.

Thanks for sharing this, Bob certainly knew it would not end. It just continues to overgrow and ruin everything. A

Sadly, you are right … the thing is, where do they stop?

The poem’s brilliant and it’s almost scary how right B0b was. But I think many people of a certain age would have been able to see what was coming 30 years ago – the changes have been threatening for some time and now we’re all stuck, too far gone to go back.

Yeah I agree, even we late 30′s early 40′s among us have seen massive changes here.
