Portland gets a Tesco store

Portland Tesco site

Portland's new Tesco site

Portland is soon to have it’s new tesco opening in Easton Square, where the stone firms was, if anyone is unsure. ;)

At the site above… I think it’s pretty placed well within that space, although I would have thought having the car park on the Easton side of the shop and the shops front facing towards Easton would have made more sense.

Overall, it does look good.

Although I have said it may do harm to the smaller shops here, Portland has needed a bigger shop for a long time, at the moment Co-Op is way to expensive for most people to do the weekly shop, so we have to venture abroad, I mean Weymouth. :)

Glad to say I will be working at Portlands tescos and doing my bit to get them off to a good start, one thing I do like is the fact they do community projects, so that will be interesting to see, what benefits they can bring to the Portland community, but it is also up to the community to make the most of the projects too.

Although the shop is not 24 hours, it is open later then any other shop on the Portland, so that’s a good thing, 11pm is pretty late, personally I thought 12 midnight would be a better time to close.

Hopefully as local produce is often used there will be some opportunities for Portland’s locals to have a beneficial role in supplyng goods, a win win for all concerned.

Let’s hope that Tescos does fit in with Portland and provide a service Portlanders deserve.

I wonder how they will utilise the internet? ;)

Portland is getting what it’s needed, let’s hope it benefits us all, and we benefit them being here.

Long overdue Rob, I am looking forward to the new store opening, it will be a bit of competition for the Coop and not before time. It is also good to see that some of our own people on Portland have been recruited to staff the store – again long overdue. It would be nice to see Portland come to life again and have some positive outlook. I don’t foresee any problem with the traffic, but then I’m only a woman and what would I know. We have to get used to change whether we like it or not – only time will tell, but I feel it will be a great benefit to the Island. Only hope that the proposed Lidl store down Underhill proves to be of some benefit too. Congratulations on becoming one of the ‘original members of Portland staff’ :o )

I think it will be good, let’s hope I get taken on full time.

Lidl will be interesting, and we do need one down underhill, badly.

Julie Juju Finch Timms Even though I dont live on the island anymore i think having a proper supermarket on the island is all for the better. My mum lives in Easton and apart from the odd hiccup in the building and electric work that knocked out the Gp surgery last week she cant wait. Long overdue and if Co-op lose customers that’s their loss to be honest the service and prices in there take the rise!!! As for the smaller shops in Weston im sure they will cope quite well even with the new Tesco. Can’t wait until next time i come down for a visit and we need to go shopping will save alot of grief trying to get over to the muff and the other bonus those that dont really need to leave the isle will be doing the carbon footprint the world of good. I love Tesco anyway they are better than Asda with the added incentive of bonus card points plus the green bonus card point so actively encourage you to re-use your carrier bags. Hurry up and open =D

I turned down my job @ Tesco which I am now regretting. But I wish the Store and its staff all the best. I am sure that it will do well here and will support it in any way I can as a Portland town Councillor.
