“Portland’s ghost tunnels”

Effectionately known as the ghost tunnels, on the highest part of the Island, these gun placements were used to fire toward the sea.

There are tunnels here, with gates, which were all locked, only two of the three are locked now.

Kids played up here alot when I was younger, though I rarely see anyone here anymore.

The tracks used for the little tram boxes are still there.

This whole place was tidied up many years ago, sadly it has fallen into decay again.

A worthy project for tidying up I think, this could be all done in one summer and if kids got involved they would be more likely to keep it that way and keep an eye on others mistreating it.

Playing doesn’t need to be vandalising.

These were built in the late 1800′s and a real part of Portlands history.

One of the huge gates and the date carved on the top.

Inside, there are several branches of rooms to either side, pitch black in there!

Took my boys up there in the summer and they were scared to go inside! lol

I remember spending loads of time up there as a kid running in and out of all the rooms!

It has got slightly smelly up there now though!!!

But I agree, good childhood memories of roaming carefree around the Island!

Ha ha… I know they do get a bit.. "woah, I aint going in THAT dad" :o )

Bless, even a few adults I know won't go in them.

Harmless, as long as you watch were you are going.
    Or take a torch.

It does stink up there nowadays…shame.

sadly I have to say I have never visited this part of the Island. I have no doubt that all of my three sons probably did in their day and maybe the less I know about that the better, lol. I always think it is a shame these places cannot be kept up to scratch and maybe even used as a tourist stop-off point – Portland, I feel, has so much to offer to the tourist with the rich history it has and it is a great shame it is not used to its full capacity in that area.

I know your lads have… um yeah less said the better ;o)

I agree Portland has lot's to offer, but Weymouth gets the tourism, the somehow think Portland takes away from Weymouth, not realising it would add to the overall tourism and in some way's has more to offer then Weymouth has.

yes, less said the better. One day I may learn one or two things, who knows!!!! As you say the faceless wonders over the water would probably take all the credit – they underestimate just how well known Portland is around this world of ours.

  7. ur great! brings back memories from when i was an old chump.
